BIG MENTORS
More than 75% of waiting Littles are young boys and most of them are minorities.
Big Brother Justin and Little Brother Oshea
ONLY 30%
of our volunteer applicants are male. While we encourage all volunteer applicants, our need for male mentors, especially men of color, is greater than ever.
THERE ARE 391 WAITING LITTLES IN OKLAHOMA
Our waiting Littles range in age from six to sixteen and their needs vary. Some children are from single-parent households that lack a male role model. Others have experienced bullying and exclusion at school and need the extra support that a Big Brother can provide.
JEDI
We are the oldest Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion focused youth empowerment organization
MORE THAN 70%
of our waiting Littles are African-American, Hispanic or from other minority backgrounds
1 IN 2
Littles are living without a father or male figure in the home
WHAT THEY NEED
While we encourage female and male mentors to apply, the list for young boys waiting to be matched is considerable.
Once a mentor, resources are provided to help with things to do together in your area, many of which are free. But what you do together isn’t as important as just being together.
PROGRAM FORMATS
-
Matches enjoy activities within the community like going to the park, eating lunch or catching a movie.
-
You will meet the child at their school to do a variety of on-campus activities. School-based matches are available in Tulsa, OKC, Bartlesville, Shawnee, Norman, and Stillwater.
-
A Big Couple mentors one child together as a team in a community-based match.
-
Oklahoma’s Big League program is a guided mentorship program which brings matches together for a BBBS-planned activity once each month with a focus on sports activities.
*This pilot program is currently only offered in Tulsa.
